The K2 Base Camp trek is widely regarded as one of the greatest wilderness journeys on Earth. At 5,150 m, the base camp sits beneath the savage south face of K2 (8,611 m) — the world's second-highest and most technically demanding 8,000 m peak. You don't need to be a mountaineer to reach its base, but you do need to be fit, acclimatised, and prepared for remote travel.
The Route at a Glance
The classic approach begins in Askole, the last village in the Braldu Valley, reached by jeep from Skardu. From here the trail follows the Braldu River, climbs onto the Baltoro Glacier, and passes through campsites that rank among the most dramatic on the planet.
- Day 1 — Askole → Jhola (23 km, ~7 hrs): Flat valley approach, first moraine crossings.
- Day 2 — Jhola → Paiju (22 km, 7 hrs): Last trees before the glacier world begins.
- Day 3 — Rest at Paiju: Acclimatise at 3,400 m; views of Trango Towers are extraordinary.
- Day 4 — Paiju → Khoburtse (12 km, 6 hrs): First full day on the Baltoro Glacier.
- Day 5 — Khoburtse → Concordia (14 km, 6 hrs, 4,600 m): The throne of glaciers — Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and II, and K2 converge here.
- Day 6 — Concordia → K2 Base Camp (10 km, 5 hrs, 5,150 m): The final climb to base camp beneath the mountain's south face.
Total: approximately 110 km one-way. Most groups allow 9–11 days to reach base camp and return to Askole.
Best Season
The window is narrow: late June to early August. July is the sweet spot — the glacier is stable, weather windows open regularly, and expedition teams are active at high camps. Before June, moraines may be buried in snow; after mid-August, storms become frequent and unpredictable.

- Restricted Area Permit (RAP): ~PKR 8,000 per person
- PTDC glacier camping fee: ~PKR 5,000 per night
- Licensed guide (mandatory): PKR 4,000–5,500/day
- Porter: PKR 2,500–3,500/day + food, insurance, return transport
All-in guided packages from Skardu (18 days, full board, permits, porters) typically run USD 1,500–2,500 per person.
Essential Gear
- 4-season sleeping bag rated to −20°C
- Trekking poles — essential on loose moraine
- Waterproof gaiters and broken-in trekking boots
- Down jacket and a synthetic midlayer
- Glacier glasses (UV protection is severe at altitude)
- High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm
- Water filter or purification tablets — streams are glacially fed but silty
Acclimatisation
Concordia sits at 4,600 m and K2 BC at 5,150 m. Plan at least one rest day at Paiju and one at Concordia. Mild AMS (headache, nausea) is common; Diamox (125 mg twice daily) is widely used prophylactically. Descend immediately if symptoms include loss of coordination, confusion, or persistent vomiting.

Getting There
Fly Islamabad → Skardu (PIA or Serene Air, ~1 hr — book weeks ahead, weather cancellations are frequent). From Skardu, a 4WD jeep to Askole takes 5–7 hours on rough but spectacular mountain roads. Most agencies in Skardu arrange this transfer as part of a package.
Responsible Trekking
The Baltoro has suffered from expedition waste for decades. Carry all non-biodegradable rubbish out, use designated toilet sites at campsites, and hire Balti porters from local communities. It is the single most meaningful contribution a trekker can make to the region's economy and its future.
