Broad Peak

Broad Peak is an 8,051-metre mountain in the Gasherbrum massif of the Karakoram. It is described as the world's 12th-highest mountain and one of the eight-thousanders. The mountain stands in Baltistan on the Pakistan–China border and lies approximately eight kilometres from K2.

Its defining physical feature is the unusually long summit, which extends for more than 1.5 kilometres. The massif also includes Rocky Summit at 8,028 metres and Broad Peak Central at 8,011 metres, as well as Broad Peak North and Kharut Kangri. Broad Peak is therefore both a named summit and part of a compact group of very high subsidiary peaks.

Broad Peak is part of the Gasherbrum massif in Baltistan, within the Karakoram range spanning Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, and Xinjiang, China. The mountain is situated on the Pakistan–China border and occupies a setting close to K2, which is approximately eight kilometres away.

The name reflects the mountain's shape. Rather than ending in a short summit point, its summit extends over 1.5 kilometres, producing the broad profile for which it is named. The main summit reaches 8,051 metres. Rocky Summit rises to 8,028 metres and Broad Peak Central to 8,011 metres; Broad Peak North reaches 7,490 metres and Kharut Kangri 6,942 metres.

The English name was introduced in 1892 by British explorer Martin Conway. It was chosen in reference to the similarly named Breithorn in the Alps and also corresponds to the mountain's unusually extended summit profile.

Broad Peak was first climbed between 8 and 9 June 1957 by Fritz Wintersteller, Marcus Schmuck, Kurt Diemberger, and Hermann Buhl during an Austrian expedition led by Marcus Schmuck. Their successful line followed the West Spur.

The expedition had already made an attempt on 29 May, when Wintersteller and Diemberger reached the forepeak at 8,030 metres. The eventual first ascent was completed without supplemental oxygen, high-altitude porters, or base-camp support, details that give the achievement particular significance in the mountain's climbing history.

Broad Peak's climbing history includes a sequence of notable firsts and individual achievements. Reinhold Messner summited in 1982, and Krystyna Palmowska made the first ascent by a woman in 1983. In 1984, Krzysztof Wielicki completed a solo ascent in 21.5 hours, described as the first one-day ascent of an 8,000-metre peak. Carlos Carsolio established a new solo route in 1994, now known as Route Carsolio, and Anatoli Boukreev made a solo ascent in 1997.

The mountain has also been climbed from different sides and by new lines. On 4 August 1992, Enric Dalmau Ferré, Òscar Cadiach, Alberto Soncini, and Lluís Ràfols became the first to reach the summit from the Chinese side. In July 2013, three Iranian climbers reached the summit via a new southwestern-face route later named Route Iran, although all three were subsequently lost during the descent.

Winter ascent is a major part of Broad Peak's mountaineering record. On 6 March 1988, Maciej Berbeka reached Rocky Summit at 8,028 metres, the first person to reach one of Broad Peak's 8,000-metre summits during winter. The first complete winter ascent followed on 5 March 2013, when Maciej Berbeka, Adam Bielecki, Tomasz Kowalski, and Artur Małek reached the main peak without supplemental oxygen.

The descent from that expedition demonstrated the mountain's seriousness. Berbeka and Kowalski did not reach Camp 4, recorded at 7,400 metres, and were later declared dead. Other incidents include the 2007 recovery of Markus Kronthaler's body from above 8,000 metres, the death of Cristina Castagna during the summer of 2009, and the loss of three Iranian climbers after their 2013 summit. The evidence also records a 2026 avalanche between Camp 2 and Camp 3 involving ten summit-bound climbers; its account contains differing statements about the final fatality count.

In summer 2012, five members of the Slovenian team Koroška 8000 summited without supplementary oxygen or high-altitude porters. They established a route through deep snow between Camp 4 and the summit, and seven climbers from other expeditions later used that line; all reached the summit on 31 July.

Broad Peak has also featured in linked high-altitude objectives. In 2008, Élisabeth Revol made solo ascents of Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I, and Gasherbrum II within 16 days without supplemental oxygen. Antoine Girard's flight over the mountain on 23 July 2016 was the first paraglider flight above an 8,000-metre summit. On 14 July 2019, 17-year-old Shehroze Kashif became the youngest person recorded as summiting Broad Peak and the youngest Pakistani to reach this altitude. Nirmal Purja summited with Elite Exped on 26 July 2019 during an attempt to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres in less than seven months, and summited again with Migma G in 2023 during an effort to climb the 14 peaks without supplemental oxygen.

Windy Gap provides a named geographic reference within the surrounding Karakoram. The pass rises to 6,111 metres and is located east of K2, north of Broad Peak, and south of Skyang Kangri. Its position illustrates the concentration of major summits and high passes around Broad Peak.
