About Sat Sari Mala

Sat Sari Mala (also known as the Sat Sar Mala Lakes) is a spectacular and relatively untraversed chain of alpine glacial lakes located in the Upper Kaghan Valley, near the village of Gittidas and Babusar Pass in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Positioned at an elevation of approximately 14,100 feet, this natural wonder originally comprised seven distinct lakes, though recent observations note they have reduced to six closely clustered bodies of water. The lakes are interconnected, with pristine glacial meltwater uniquely cascading from one lake down into the next, culminating with Surkhail Lake as the highest in the sequence. The trek to Sat Sari Mala commences along the Naran-Babusar Highway just before the Gittidas milestone. Reaching the first lake requires an accessible hike of roughly one to one and a half hours alongside a mountain stream. Exploring the entire chain and ascending to the steep, technical panoramic viewpoint takes upwards of four hours, rewarding trekkers with a rare vantage point where all the primary lakes can be seen in a single frame. Due to heavy high-altitude snowfall, the destination remains completely snowbound for most of the year and is only accessible during the peak summer window from late July to mid-September.

The story

The story of Sat Sari Mala

Overview and Geography

Sat Sari Mala (commonly referred to as Sat Sar Mala Lakes) represents an extraordinary series of high-altitude alpine lakes positioned in the Upper Kaghan Valley within the Mansehra District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Situated closely to the border of Gilgit-Baltistan and near the famed Babusar Pass, this cluster sits at an elevated plain of approximately 4,298 meters (14,100 feet) above sea level. Geographically unique, the destination is renowned for its interconnected water system where pristine glacial meltwater from the surrounding snowcapped ridges cascades sequentially from the highest lake down through the entire chain.

The Trekking Route

The journey to Sat Sari Mala commences from the Naran-Babusar Highway near the historical settlement of Gittidas. The initial segment of the trek follows a clear mountain stream, demanding a moderately inclined hike of roughly 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the first lake. Advancing further to discover all six or seven visible lakes involves traversing rocky glacial moraines and scree slopes. For experienced trekkers, a steep ascent to the dominating mountain ridge provides an unparalleled vantage point from which the major water bodies can be observed simultaneously in a single, comprehensive view.

Practical Visitor Guidance

Due to its extreme altitude, Sat Sari Mala is completely locked under heavy snow for most of the year. The optimal visitation window is strictly limited to the late summer months of August and September, when the trails clear and the Naran-Babusar road is fully accessible. There are no commercial facilities, shelters, or cellular networks available at the lakes; visitors must arrive entirely self-sufficient with proper mountain gear, waterproof layering, and adequate supplies. The nearest base for accommodation and vehicle hiring is located at Besal or further south in Naran town.
