About Nanga Parbat
Geography and Mountain Structure
Nanga Parbat lies immediately southeast of the northernmost bend of the Indus River, within Nanga Parbat National Park and at the border of Diamer and Astore districts in Gilgit-Baltistan. It is the westernmost major peak of the Himalayas and the westernmost Himalayan eight-thousander. The western end of the Karakoram lies to the north, while Zoji La in Kashmir Valley is identified as its key col connecting it to higher peaks in the wider Himalaya–Karakoram system.
The mountain's core is a long southwest–northeast ridge made of ice and rock. The Diamir, Rakhiot, and Rupal faces define its principal sides. Rakhiot Peak reaches 7,070 metres along the northeastern continuation of the ridge, while North Peak rises to 7,816 metres about three kilometres north of the main summit. Winter Climbing

Earlier Polish, British, French, Austrian, Italian, and other expeditions repeatedly reached high camps and elevations between approximately 5,100 and 7,800 metres, but were turned back by deep snow, heavy snowfall, frostbite, injury, pulmonary edema, and other hazards. Several attempts had to place base camp below the intended face because snow prevented equipment from being hauled farther.
The first successful winter ascent was completed on 26 February 2016 by Ali Sadpara, Alex Txikon, and Simone Moro. The second followed on 25 January 2018 by Tomasz Mackiewicz and Élisabeth Revol. Hazard, Rescue, and Preparation Context

Their achievement was recognized with the Piolet d'Or in April 2013.
